Gift of Life
Sonya Struber is a dedicated community advocate who has spent years working to create a cleaner, safer, and more connected environment for future generations. In 2009, she began voluntarily cleaning up Gordon Creek and later Clarke Creek, ensuring that footpaths, gutters, and drains remained free from pollution. Her passion for protecting nature and fostering a sense of community responsibility has remained at the heart of her work.
Her commitment to this cause was tested in 2016 when her grandson was born, and concerns for her safety in a changing neighbourhood led her to step back from solo cleanup efforts. However, her deep awareness of societal shifts, particularly the rise of dangerous drug use and its devastating impact on individuals and families, strengthened her resolve to find new ways to support and educate her community.
Sonya has witnessed firsthand the struggles of young people caught in difficult circumstances. A chance encounter with a young woman seeking refuge under a bridge after escaping exploitation reinforced her belief in the power of early intervention and the need to guide vulnerable individuals toward a safer path.
Her experiences, from witnessing the tragic consequences of addiction to facing break-ins and rising crime in her own neighbourhood, have shaped her perspective on the importance of instilling values of respect, responsibility, and community care from a young age. She believes in the necessity of finding new ways to connect with and support children and families, particularly in a world where traditional community structures, such as churches, are no longer central to many lives.
Through Gift of Life, Sonya hopes to inspire action, encourage awareness, and remind readers that even small efforts can make a profound difference. Her work is a testament to the idea that when we invest in the well-being of others—especially the youngest among us—we help shape a better future for all.
